I feel like a lot of ficcers don't either. I think it's a bigger challenge to humanize a character than to say "and then Giovanni did evil stuff and stole some Pokemon" and make them someone the readers can identify with and even cheer for in the story.

And yet, I think the anime's done more of this with him than any of the other Evil Team leaders. Especially in BW- this story itself was actually partly inspired by this scene (http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/8/88/Giovanni_Persian.png) because I found it so adorable, and then the next episode they show him drinking coffee and being relatively polite.

It's a tricky line to toe, making him likable while showing and acknowledging he's still a massive dickbag, and I think that's why I have so much fun writing stuff like this.

I have two more Giovanni and Persian stories like this one, actually, though they're set during the childhood that I flashed back to in this. One is set at Christmas (http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/f227/heartwarming-winter-tales-submission-thread-90433/index2.html#post2591870), and the other I can't post anywhere yet because it's still being judged in a contest, sadly.
