Oh.

ANN reviewed Arceus and the Jewel of Life

next time, ANN, try to your anti-Pokemon bias a little less obvious, kay?

Great image right there, LOL.

Yeahhhhhh, that review is a bit much on the bashing side. I admit though, one of the things that really annoyed me is Team Rocket not having much of a role in the movie. Another thing that bugs me is Marcus. I don't know, but he's just not much of an interesting antagonist like the other ones in the Pokemon movies to me.

[identity profile] nekusagi.livejournal.com 2011-05-13 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well yeah, it's pretty much impossible to find any antagonists interesting after Grings Motherfucking Kodai.

And the thing about Team Rocket is the ONLY thing in that review I agreed on, tbh.

Totally agreeing that Grings Kodai is the most interesting antagonist. I actually think Marcus has some potential, but the movie left him short.

Heh, this is why I gave up on that site years ago. Well, one of the reasons anyway. :V

Also, awesome macro is AWESOME. <3

ANN is decent for news, but no one there has an opinion worth taking seriously.

I thought the forum thread was pretty nice. Had to toss my opinion in there too.

I really didn't understand why they brought that up in the review, then said to show your kids Kiki's Delivery Service instead.

Ghibli films are FULL of polytheism.

[identity profile] blackjackrocket.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember any theism at all in Kiki. But yeah, pretty much. I don't see what they thought was bizarre about it in Pokemon (well, other than that the gods can be captured, but the thought of entirely invulnerable gods isn't exactly innate. The Norse gods, for instance, could even be harmed by mortals).

[identity profile] nekusagi.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I meant Ghibli movies in general. I mean Pokemon movies are no more full of gods and spirits than your typical anime family fare. It's a big part of the Japanese culture and I think you could go as far as to interpret that remark as a little bit on the racist side, in light of that fact.

[identity profile] blackjackrocket.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's racist. Culturalist perhaps, but that would depend on what they meant by it.

[identity profile] nekusagi.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe not racist, yeah, but I guess ethnocentric.

I just can't comprehend why a site that focuses on reviewing JAPANESE media would call out a movie for polytheism.

[identity profile] blackjackrocket.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the full phrase wasn't just about polytheism, but "weird polythiestic undercurrent", so perhaps they just found the polytheism in the specific movie to be weird. They need to elaborate on what they meant by it. Perhaps someone should ask, or I'll see if they reply to the thread.
