I just can't comprehend why a site that focuses on reviewing JAPANESE media would call out a movie for polytheism.

Well, the full phrase wasn't just about polytheism, but "weird polythiestic undercurrent", so perhaps they just found the polytheism in the specific movie to be weird. They need to elaborate on what they meant by it. Perhaps someone should ask, or I'll see if they reply to the thread.
