I enjoyed this a lot and will be looking for your conclusion. Your Giovanni always surprises me with how sympathetic I am toward him --- I should be used to it by now, but the Giovanni who lives in my head is so awful I probably never will. :) I like how collected he is, how this story makes a mob boss being a Gym Leader believable, how he moves smoothly through a world that clearly values Pokemon but isn't intensely focused on them.
Ariana is also great, although it was surprising at first to think of her as having weakness around distrusting herself and alcohol. I like it, once explained, but I was a little shocked when I saw it happen. She's otherwise laser-competent and that's great. (A question: In the Pokemon universe, wouldn't a leather-lined card case be, like, really evil?)
Rockets having a true crime hobby is just hilarious :)
Is the former champion a character from somewhere or just someone you threw in? I looked around a bit but I could be missing something clever.
