Okay.... watched Deoxys Destiny on Saturday.... here's what I thought.

Story: Seriously sucked. Most pokemon movies have some semblance of a conflict; this one was lacking. The open was okay, what with the Deoxys/Rayquaza battle and whatnot (which was actually one of the better battles in the anime), but explaining away the kid’s fear of Pokemon by having him run over by a Spheal/Walrein stampede? It just seems so…. Lazy.  But there really was no plot to speak of…
Characters: Rafe= HOT! One of the best looking bishies I’ve seen for a while (well, not as hot as say, Jiri or Mondo, or even Bashou)  but still rather hot.   Tory was about as annoying as Ash, and it’s a shame the writers had to resort to the “traumatized kid” cliché to get us to feel sorry for him. Brock barely did anything (sorta a shame, as he’s the only one of the twerps who hasn’t driven me up the wall yet) save for hitting on Yuko the entire time. And there was a serious lack of the Useless Trio; they only got about five minutes of screen time altogether. I did like Dr. Lund, however; if only because he seems the type of scientist whose obsession would drive him to join TR. (Read: new fanfic material for Neku) On the plus side, Plusle, Minun, and Munchlax provided a pleasant diversion, plus the scene near the end (which I won’t reveal at the risk of spoilers) made decent use of an otherwise useless mascot character. Altogether, my favorite character was the little security robot; I may start a ship b/t him and Haruka’s pokedex just to annoy the heck out of people.
Animation: Gorgeous. The open with all the random scenic shots really shows how far things have come in the last six or seven years, and I would love a screenshot of the Arbok in a tree to use as wallpaper. It’s a shame 4Kids had to go and get rid of the shadow for Deoxys’ big entrance, but that is US anime distribution for you…. They’ve finally mastered the art of putting computer graphics with 2D animation and making it work.
Nekusagi’s Verdict: It doesn’t quite suck, but it’s not good either. It may end up being like Mewtwo Returns: the forgotten movie you either love or hate, but it definitely won’t reach MR’s cult status. I’ll probably buy the DVD anyway like most fans out there, if only for the promo card. The lack of quotable lines is also rather sad. Brock on hot dogs: “Gotta catch em all!” (Kill me….) I’m not sure if I should place the blame on 4Kids for killing what may have been a decent movie, or the Japanese writers themselves. Hopefully number 8 will be better.
