I have another meme for you guys... from evilazurill, and I'd love if as many people filled it out, not because I'm a creepy stalker, but because VisComm is boring and I need SOMETHING to pass the time on those Macs in there. Oh, and I'm still on my writing streak. I decided to ditch the idea of a Valentine's Day special on R100 (because I'm lazy and HATE the holiday anyway) in favor of just posting a really cute Diamondshipping fic instead. It's more or less written in my head right now and as soon as I get it on paper I will be very happy and feel nice and wuzzy inside. Giovanni actually gets a happy ending in this one! But right now, I'm struggling with a Researchershipping story I'm working on... most of it's good, but the ending (what I've got done) is kinda crappy. It's there under the cut. If you've got a suggestion, tell me and I'll give you some credit for it.
44. Experiment
"He's sleeping right now. He probably will be for a while. You might want to be quiet, he needs the rest," the nurse said, as Giovanni approached the bed Sebastian lay in in the infirmary.
It wasn't supposed to be this way. The moment Sebastian had complained of his flu two days ago, Giovanni had offered him some medicine, since he'd just recovered from a nasty case himself. Until you can get to the drugstore, he recalled telling him. But Sebastian just muttered something about resistant bacteria and turned it down, saying he'd manage. It was how he managed that got him there. Though the particulars were still unclear, Sebastian had self-medicated with something he cooked up in the lab.
"Damn it, Sebastian," he muttered. Hadn't he learned his lesson about self-experimentation the first time he ended up here? Giovanni could understand Sebastian's belief that knowledge was nothing more than pure, distilled power, but the professor always seemed to take it to extremes, to the point of using himself as a test subject. He'd been that way since they were younger...
"Are you sure that's going to work, Sebastian?"
"Yeah. Contact lenses are just glasses you stick on your eyes, right?"
"Um... I think so. But I think you look fine with glasses..."
Sebastian nearly went permanently blind with that one. And here he was, some twenty plus years later, nearly killing himself because he was too proud to actually bother with admitting he was no doctor, too proud just to walk to the corner drugstore and pick up some medicine. He was lucky to be there when Sebastian collapsed, the nurse said. Apparently Sebastian had poisoned himself and mixed two ingredients that were perfectly harmless when taken alone, but toxic when combined even in small amounts. Had Giovanni not taken him up there as soon as it happened to have the poison removed from his system before it managed to circulate through too much more of his body... "A coma at best," the nurse said. He'd nearly lost his only real friend in the world...
"You're an idiot," he said, running a finger down the soft white streak in Sebastian's hair, brushing his jet black bangs out of his face. He looked so beautiful when he slept. "A complete idiot. You could have killed yourself, you know, and then..." He shuddered at the thought. The two had been friends practically forever, the only ones either of them had. More than friends, they were like brothers. A world without Sebastian was nearly unthinkable. "...Then what would I do?"
What's the point? He can't hear you, a voice from somewhere inside Giovanni told him. But that was the point, wasn't it? When Sebastian woke up, things would just go back to normal, and he'd chalk the incident with the medication up as a fluke, then just go on to the next thing. Wasn't that his job, after all? And Giovanni would just watch as Sebastian went and screwed himself up again...
Why did he put up with this? How many other people would admit to closeness to such a person, one who could only be described as more than a little insane? There seemed to be something more there than friendship for some reason, something deeper than even that... something they both knew but would never acknowledge, at least not verbally.
"It's about time for Sebastian to take his medicine," the nurse said, breaking the silence that now filled the room and yanking Giovanni back into the moment somewhat abruptly. She held an empty syringe in her right hand with a rather nasty looking needle gleaming in the light.
"Of course," he said, getting up from his seat next to the bed. He felt a twinge of guilt. What if he weren't so fortunate? What if Sebastian's condition suddenly took a turn for the worst and the next time the two were in a room together...
He wasn't about to let his parting words be "you're an idiot". Even if Sebastian was still asleep, even if he couldn't hear a word being said around him...
"I love you," he whispered, kissing Sebastian's forehead. Sebastian opened his eyes, apparently just in time to escape a painful awakening.
" Did you say something?" he asked, as though he'd been awake the whole time.
"No," Giovanni lied. "I was just about to leave, and thought I'd say goodbye..." He broke off. "You heard me, didn't you?"
"I've been half awake the whole time. I don't know why you felt like you could only tell me that when I was asleep."
"Told you what?" Giovanni asked. It was pointless playing dumb now, but he still wondered.
"I do too," Sebastian said.
..and it just cuts off after that. Obviously, it's not over, and I can't figure out how to end it properly. So yeah. If anyone has any good ideas for an ending, just post them.
