Am I the ONLY one amused by the overreaction to the recent revelation about basic accounts? (Go and read the News on LJ's homepage if you're in the dark.)
So you can only get an ad-supported account now for free. And apparently, depending on who you listen to, this is OMG THE END OF LJ as we know it because, horror of horrors, you might have an ad on your page here or there. People are calling this "worse than the strikethrough", among other things.
Pardon me for saying this, but if you're still getting an account AND NOT PAYING FOR it, it's still FREE, isn't it? I can understand why people got upset over the brief most popular censoring for a while (and even that got fixed, just like Strikethrough ended up being), but really. Ads aren't the end of the world. And the way the economy is lately, I can't blame them for switching to it. You just can't run a site for free. Oh, and I'm DEFINITELY renewing my Paid account, incidentally.
EDIT: Just logged in as Nekou to post to her journal and saw the ads. THEY'RE NOT THAT BAD. Chrissakes, MySpace is WALLPAPERED WITH THOSE THINGS. One on top and one on bottom. Not as obnoxious as people say they are.
Every forum I'm a member of has ads. My email has ads. And I really hate to break it to all the wonderful people switching to InsaneJournal/Greatest Journal, but they're bound to get ads sooner or later as well. They're just a fact of the Internet these days. Yes, they mishandled the decision a bit and probably should have given a heads up, but I really don't see why people have been going off the deep end over this. (And I'd have posted over on the replies thread for the original news post, but the last person who did something to that effect got flamed like crazy.)
Get a life, people.
(Yes, I realize being a SOVA member I may be a hypocrite in posting this, but for the most part, we've been optimistic, civil, and haven't called the recast the end of Pokemon, or anything. There's a big difference.)
