Well, the posting gods are smiling on me today, so I get to put up ANOTHER post (before Monday). I didn't get all my gripes in, so here they are.
3. The Gym Leaders expansions.
What the hell happened? The Gym 1 and 2 expansions took a good thing (gym leaders) and totally bastardized some of them. My main gripes are Sabrina and Giovanni's sets. Come on people- Sabrina training a PSYDUCK? And a JYNX? Please. Then there's Gio's set, which really pisses me off. Apparently, a trainer of EARTH types finds it necessary to have a Gyrados- water/dragon. Yes, Gyrados is very Gio-ish, but still, stick to the games or anime, please? Although I will say that Ken Sugimori provided some very cool art for his cards, especially Meowth, Persian (which I usually despise) and his Trainer card, as well as Control (if you havent seen it, look at it, it has some very sweet art)Yes, I knew this expansion came out three years ago, but looking back.....
4. As long as we're on the TCG, let me provide some commentary on the art
Note: I havent bought Pokemon cards since Neo Discovery, so if this seems a bit dated...I'm VERY old school.
Ken Sugimori
Best. Artist. Ever. Ken's style is very distinctive- gorgeous watercolor depictions of the monsters, over a cool, simple background. He did some great art for Gio and the Rockets' sets in the Gym expansion (he did all of the Rockets for Gym Heroes, and the entire Giovanni set for Gym Challenge) and his art still strikes a chord with me. He should know how to do good character art- he did all the monster designs for the games.
Well, that's all the time I has today. Come back next week for the rest of my rants, and maybe a little fanfic update.
