Maybe it's just one of those things my Aspie brain can't wrap itself around, but why do the members of [livejournal.com profile] egl  bemoan that as much as they like the link I posted to the book purse tutorial, they would feel sad cutting up a book?

A book is not sentient. It lacks feelings. And I get not being able to cut up a book that has sentimental feeling to you, but something you grabbed off the shelf at Half-Price or Goodwill just for the project? Something you have no attachment to, being "hard" to cut up?

I really don't understand if the members are trying to be twee and OH BOOKS ARE TOO SPECIAL FOR ME because they think it makes them look cute or if there is honestly some LJ hivemind that holds all written material as sacrosanct and I'm doing it wrong.

eh, i know for me personally, i am a packrat because i need objects to recall memories for me. LJ helps some, because i can search for things, but for the most part, my younger life is small trinkets and crappy jewelry and a few prized books.
this doesn't mean all books, cause i've cut up books before and torn them up for props. in the end its paper. donating them somewhere doesn't ensure their "safety" either.
i think they might be trying to appear intellectual and to have respect for books. Like people will have discussions on nabokov every now and then (a handful of girls have read it, at best) but EVERYONE jumps in. idgi either.

Seriously, that's all I can figure. But talking about how "heartbreaking" it is to re-purpose an inanimate object into a fashion accessory just makes you look kinda ridculous.

lol, no, they have discussions on Lolita.

I would probably piss myself if I saw them trying to converse on anything else by him.

It's okay, I actually had one conversation with someone from the egl community about Lolita, but then I brought up Poe's Annabel Lee and I swear to god her mind was blown that Nabokov wasn't 100% original.

Plus I love your lj name, my fiance and I just watched There will be Blood and got milkshakes so we've been randomly going "I drink your milkshake".

LOL!
Well, its really upsetting that people in EGL generally only read it because it's called "lolita". Its really unfortunate.

My lj name is from that silly cat macro many moons ago, but it's proven cute many a time.

lol.

Yes and then they try and justify the relationship between Humbert and Lolita, or my personal favorite, try to blame her.

In a similar vein, I can KINDA get what they're saying since I refuse to write in books, like college SAYS I'm supposed to, and I'm like, "But, but, it's a BOOK. I CAN'T WRITE IN A BOOK." It's a weird complex.

Otherwise, I do agree with you if it's a used book that otherwise has no use other than being, well, used for something besides reading.

Me it'd be the collector in me. Those look like some old-ass books.

I thought about that. I've seen books like that a quarter apiece at church garage sales.

Then again, for a brief moment I had thoughts of finding an old Poe treasury for this project, and immediately determined "oh god how could i ever do that to POE". So maybe it's not so irrational on some books.

*lmao*

It's totally normal to feel that way about some books, but I'm picturing someone freaking out about a 1980's hardcover reprinting of Lolita to which I say "lol".
